Description

Here, at  4-5/8,"  is a  WATERMAN 42 chased black hard rubber safety pen, from about 1910. The only hardware on the pen is a slip-on clip, but it is an original French Waterman clip. Though the markings are tiny, the clip itself still has remnants of a Globe Ideal logo and Waterman style rivets. The band has numerous markings, IDEAL, PARIS, DEPOSE,  and F.S. The metal looks like silver and cleaned up like silver, but an acid test was negative. The black hard rubber has modest wear to the chasing on the cap and barrel. Still the three line imprints on the barrel  remain prominent. It is in 4 lines one of which is FOUNTAIN PEN N.Y. USA. It includes several patent dates, none later than 1903, 2 other 19th C.  The 42 at the base on the advance is also bold. The cap also has an imprint next to the clip in two lines also including the 1903 pat. date.  Color of the hard rubber remains excellent with no toning.  Cap threading is good and the nib advances and retracts smoothly. However there is a problem with the nib retracting on its own when pressure to paper is applied. I'm no sure what locks it is position normally, but it needs attention.  The nib is a 14kt WATERMAN IDEAL  NEW YORK, 2,  a very flexible fine point.  At some point the nib has had it tines straightened ... tool marks are visible. As far as I can tell with the movement of the nib, it is still a smooth writer.
