Description

In the search for an alternative to harmful chemical pesticides and herbicides, occultation is the all-natural technique for weed mitigation and prevention and stale seedbed preparation.  When black tarps are laid against the soil, warmth and moisture and encouraged underneath.  As the soil warms, more weed seeds come out of dormancy.  As the germinate, they sprout into a dark and suffocating environment void of sunlight or air movement.  Ultimately the weeds die under the tarp and are consumed by worms and other organisms that enjoy the darkness.  When the covering is removed, the amount of work necessary to prepare the garden bed is greatly reduced.
Leave the film on as long as necessary.  When removed, the surface weeds should be destroyed and the bed will be stale of weeds and ready for the new plants.
This weeding technique has been widely used in Europe and is becoming more and more popular in the United States.
