On July 26, 1985, the U.S. Postal Service issued these
    Veterans Korea
gummed 22¢ stamps in Washington, DC. The stamp art, a pencil drawing on paper by Robert A. Anderson of Lexington, MA,
    was
    based on a 1950
    Life
magazine photograph by David Douglas Duncan that depicts
weary troops trudging through a mountain pass on the march seaward from the Chosen Reservoir after the intervention by Chinese Communist forces on November 27.
    The Duncan
    Life
photo (3rd photo above) had the following caption: "
American Marines passed bodies of fallen comrades during the retreat from the Chosin Reservoir, December 1950"...
but the dead bodies have, deliberately, not been included in the stamp art.
The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when North Korea invaded South Korea. The US and the UN quickly joined in to support South Korea, and eventually the Chinese joined the north. 33,000 Americans died before a truce ended the 3-year trauma of the Korean War. It was the first conflict in which U.S. troops fought under the flag of the United Nations. On July 27, 1953, the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed, bringing about the end of fighting in the Korean War.
