Waterman Hundred Year Pen, Canadian production 1940s, in burgundy lucite with clear celluloid ends and gold filled trim. This is the full size model, slightly thinner than the oversized 'Supersize' pen, and with Waterman's big 17-size nib. This is the same size as the Number 7 keyhole nibs from the Ripple era, and have similar qualities. I'd say this particular 17 nib could have been classed as a Brown nib in the '20s, fine and flexible with medium-length tines.
The pen has its original clear end piece which is showing crazing as you can see, so it may need replacing. It could stay like this for years, or it could break apart tomorrow. In any case, several of our excellent repair people can provide a replacement when the time comes. The clear top cap also shows internal crazing, but it's unlikely to need replacing unless you want to for cosmetic reasons.
The nib is delightful -- quite fine with no pressure, and capable of fat downstrokes when pressure is added. I've called it an extra fine but your opinion may differ -- refer to the photos. The downstrokes can go up to about 2.1mm -- significant line variation. It's not overly soft, allowing for good control, and it can be used with no shading at all with little effort at holding back. It's a charming example of the high-quality versatile flexible nibs Waterman produced in the golden age of fountain pens. See the writing sample in the photos.
See my Instagram ("vintagewriting") for a video of the writing sample.
Lever filler, restored with a new sac installed. Length about 5 1/16 inches.
The writing samples were made with the pen itself, dipped in Waterman Intense Black ink, on a Rhodia pad.
ITEM 4131
COPYRIGHT NOTICE
All photographs and written descriptions appearing here are the property of the Rob Morrison.
