This is an modern style agate Medusa cameo. The cameo has been bezel set into sterling silver with a permanent bail 4 mm chain. It is approximately 20 mm round ( 0.79 inches) in size. Comes with a sterling chain 18". Medusa was one of the three Gorgons, daughters of Phorcys and Ceto, sisters of the Graeae, Echidna, and Ladon – all dreadful and fearsome beasts. A beautiful mortal, Medusa was the exception in the family, until she incurred the wrath of Athena, either due to her boastfulness or because of an ill-fated love affair with Poseidon. A new dimension of artistic skill and aesthetic appeal was added to cameo carving when it was discovered that many stones - and later, shells - were made of different colored layers.
